Their Story

Dustin John Perrott was a 23-year-old from Fredericksburg, Virginia, who served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Sergeant Perrott died on June 21, 2007, in the village of Organ-E, located in the volatile eastern province of Paktika, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it came under enemy small-arms fire. Perrott was reportedly killed during that engagement.

His death occurred during a period of intensified combat in Afghanistan. By 2007, Taliban insurgents had regrouped and were mounting a significant resurgence, employing ambushes and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) against U.S. and coalition forces. The 82nd Airborne Division was heavily engaged in counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern and southern regions.

Perrott's death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to the United States for burial.

Sergeant Perrott is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 21W, Line 102 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial at the Pentagon.
