A native of Antelope, California, he was 27 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. His service also included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On May 17, 2010, Staff Sergeant Perkins was killed in a hostile incident in the vicinity of Forward Operating Base Edinburgh in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
