U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Brandon Robert Pepper, 31, of York, Pennsylvania, was killed in hostile action on July 21, 2012, in Latif, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Staff Sergeant Brandon Robert Pepper was a 31-year-old soldier from York, Pennsylvania. He was assigned to Company B, 4th Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces Regiment, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Pepper died on July 21, 2012, in the Latif district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he was killed by enemy small arms fire while on patrol.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The war involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups including the Taliban.

The Pentagon officially announced Pepper's death on July 23, 2012. He was survived by his wife and children. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with full military honors.

Staff Sergeant Pepper was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the York County Administrative Center in Pennsylvania.
