Specialist Pedro Lazaro Pena-suarez was a 35-year-old soldier from Miami, Florida. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, part of the 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Pena-suarez died on November 7, 2002, in Kuwait City, Kuwait. He was reportedly killed in a non-combat vehicle accident while his unit was conducting training operations in the country. The accident occurred at Camp Doha, a major U.S. military logistics hub.
His death took place during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign launched in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In late 2002, while major combat operations were underway in Afghanistan, thousands of U.S. troops were also deployed to Kuwait as part of the buildup for the subsequent invasion of Iraq.
The Department of Defense announced his death on November 9, 2002. He was survived by his wife and children. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Specialist Pena-suarez is memorialized on the 3rd Infantry Division monument at Fort Stewart and is listed on the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall. His name is also included in the Pentagon's official casualty lists for Operation Enduring Freedom.
