U.S. Army Specialist Justin Reid Pellerin, 21, of Boscawen, New Hampshire, was killed in action on August 20, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Shank in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Justin Reid Pellerin was a 21-year-old soldier from Boscawen, New Hampshire. He served as a Specialist in Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On August 20, 2009, Pellerin was killed by enemy fire at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from hostile fire while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Pellerin's death occurred during a period of intense fighting as U.S. forces surged troop levels to counter a resilient Taliban insurgency. The 3rd Brigade Combat Team of the 10th Mountain Division was deployed to eastern Afghanistan, a region marked by complex counterinsurgency operations and frequent attacks on coalition bases.
His body was returned to New Hampshire, where he was buried with military honors. The Concord Monitor reported that hundreds of community members lined the streets of Boscawen during his funeral procession. His family remembered him as a dedicated soldier who loved his country.
Specialist Pellerin is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division memorial at Fort Drum and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery. He was one of 2356 American service members to die during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
