Ronald Raymond Payne Jr. was a 23-year-old Marine corporal from Lakeland, Florida. He served with Bravo Company, 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

According to U.S. Department of Defense records, Cpl. Payne died on May 8, 2004, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report lists the cause as hostile action, though specific details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.

Payne's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the 9/11 attacks. By 2004, major combat operations had shifted to counter-insurgency against a resurgent Taliban and other militant groups, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. Local media in Florida reported his passing, noting he was a graduate of Lakeland High School.
