Petty Officer Second Class Shane Eric Patton, 22, of Boulder City, Nevada, was a U.S. Navy SEAL killed in a firefight in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on June 28, 2005.

Their Story

Shane Eric Patton was born and raised in Boulder City, Nevada. He enlisted in the United States Navy and, after rigorous training, was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One (SDVT-1), an elite unit specializing in underwater delivery systems and special reconnaissance.

On June 28, 2005, Patton was part of a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team operating in the mountainous terrain near Asadabad, Kunar Province. According to military reports, the team was ambushed by anti-coalition militia forces. A prolonged firefight ensued. Patton and two other SEALs, Petty Officer Second Class Danny P. Dietz and Petty Officer First Class Jeffrey A. Lucas, were killed in the engagement. A fourth team member, Hospital Corpsman First Class Marcus Luttrell, was the sole survivor.

Patton's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2005, the conflict had entered a phase of intense counterinsurgency operations in the country's eastern provinces. The region around Kunar was a known stronghold for Taliban and other militant groups, with frequent ambushes and attacks on coalition forces.

The incident triggered a large-scale search and rescue operation. In an attempt to extract the besieged SEAL team, a U.S. Army Special Operations MH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, killing all 16 service members aboard. The event, known as the "Battle of Roberts Ridge," resulted in the single largest loss of life for U.S. Special Operations Forces since the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu.

Patton was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart. He is remembered in his hometown, where a memorial was later dedicated. His name is inscribed on the Navy SEAL Memorial at the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida.
