Claudio Iv Patino was a 22-year-old Marine from Yorba Linda, California. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Twentynine Palms, California. His unit deployed as part of Regimental Combat Team 2 under the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward.
Corporal Patino died on June 22, 2010, in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by hostile fire. The Marine Corps did not release further specifics on the incident, but his death occurred during a period of intense combat operations in the province.
Patino's death came during the 2009-2011 troop surge in Afghanistan, a major escalation of Operation Enduring Freedom. The surge focused heavily on Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production. The 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines was engaged in clearing operations in the volatile Sangin district, one of the war's most dangerous areas.
Patino was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. He is memorialized on the 'Wall of Heroes' at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in his hometown of Yorba Linda. The Marine Corps reported that his unit had recently suffered several casualties in the same region.
His name is inscribed on Panel 11W, Row 117 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. He is also listed on the online memorials maintained by the Marine Corps and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.
