U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant Tyler Edward Parten, 24, of Marianna, Arkansas, was killed in a hostile incident in the Ghehazi District of Afghanistan on September 10, 2009.
Their Story
Tyler Edward Parten was a 24-year-old 1st Lieutenant from Marianna, Arkansas. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. According to his unit, his military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment in Afghanistan.
On September 10, 2009, Parten was killed in the Ghehazi District of Afghanistan's Wardak province. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death resulted from wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.
Parten's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Army, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
Following his death, the 4th Brigade Combat Team's commander, Col. Randy George, stated Parten was 'an exceptional leader who cared deeply for his soldiers.' Memorials were held in Afghanistan and at Fort Carson. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.
1st Lt. Parten is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and on online veterans' memorials. In 2010, a memorial scholarship was established in his name at his alma mater, the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
