Their Story

Jason Ray Parsons was a 24-year-old from Lenoir, North Carolina. He served as an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, which was based in Hohenfels, Germany.

Sergeant Parsons died on January 9, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Lagman in Zabul Province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely reported in public releases.

Parsons was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. By 2009, the conflict was in its eighth year, with insurgent forces employing improvised explosive devices and direct attacks against coalition forces and bases, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions.
