U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Dae Han Park, 36, of Watertown, Connecticut, was killed in action on March 12, 2011, in the vicinity of Dahane Say, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Sergeant First Class Dae Han Park was a Special Forces soldier assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. A native of Watertown, Connecticut, he was 36 years old at the time of his death. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On March 12, 2011, Park was killed by enemy small arms fire during combat operations in Dahane Say, a village in the Now Zad district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. The area was a known Taliban stronghold. He was reportedly part of a partnered mission with Afghan forces at the time of the incident.

Park's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, marked by a surge of U.S. troops and intensified counterinsurgency operations in southern provinces like Helmand.

According to military statements, Park was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife and two children. A memorial service was held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Park is remembered by his unit as a dedicated and professional soldier. His name is inscribed on the 1st Special Forces Group memorial at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Connecticut Veterans Memorial Park in Rocky Hill.
