Their Story

Alejandro Jose Pardo was a 21-year-old soldier from Porterville, California. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army's 978th Military Police Company, 93rd Military Police Battalion, 89th MP Brigade, based at Fort Bliss, Texas.

On July 8, 2012, Pardo was killed in Maidan Shahr, the capital of Wardak province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. According to reports from the time, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire.

Pardo's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and coalition forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan security forces.

The Department of Defense announced his death on July 10, 2012. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Porterville. Local news reported that his family and community held memorial services.

He is memorialized on the Porterville Veterans Memorial and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls. His name appears on the 'Faces of the Fallen' online memorial maintained by The Washington Post.
