Staff Sergeant David Lawrence Paquet, 26, of Rising Sun, Maryland, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in action in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, on August 20, 2008.
Their Story
Staff Sergeant David Lawrence Paquet was a 26-year-old soldier from Rising Sun, Maryland. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Hood, Texas.
Paquet died on August 20, 2008, in Jalalabad, the capital of Afghanistan's Nangarhar province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device during a mounted patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was in a phase characterized by a resurgent Taliban and a high frequency of IED attacks against coalition forces, particularly in eastern provinces like Nangarhar.
Paquet was one of at least 113 American service members killed in Afghanistan in 2008. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. The 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment is known as the 'Blue Spaders,' a unit with a long history that saw extensive deployment during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
