Pape, Kevin Matthew

Kevin Matthew Pape was a Staff Sergeant serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. He was from Fort Wayne, Indiana, and was 30 years old at the time of his death.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Pape died on November 16, 2010, in Konar province, Afghanistan. He was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation. The 75th Ranger Regiment confirmed his death in a press release, stating he was on his seventh deployment, having previously served three tours in Iraq and three in Afghanistan.

Pape's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. Konar province, along the mountainous border with Pakistan, was a frequent site of insurgent activity and intense combat operations involving U.S. special operations forces.

Following his death, the 75th Ranger Regiment honored Pape in a statement, noting his multiple awards, which included the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. His body was returned to the United States, and services were held in his home state of Indiana.

Staff Sergeant Pape is memorialized on the 75th Ranger Regiment's casualty list and on the Afghanistan War casualty roster maintained by the Defense Department. His name is also inscribed on the Indiana Fallen Heroes Memorial in Indianapolis.
