Their Story
Jason T. Palmerton was a sergeant assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 25-year-old soldier was a native of Auburn, Nebraska. His unit, part of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force, had been deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 23, 2005, Palmerton was killed during a combat mission in the village of Qal'eh-Yegaz, located in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. The operation was part of a broader U.S. and allied effort to clear insurgent forces from the mountainous region near the Pakistani border.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By mid-2005, the conflict had evolved into a protracted counterinsurgency, with frequent engagements in eastern provinces like Kunar. These operations aimed to disrupt militant networks and support the nascent Afghan government.
The Department of Defense announced Palmerton's death on July 25, 2005. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in his hometown of Auburn, Nebraska.
Sergeant Palmerton is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the 3rd Special Forces Group memorial at Fort Bragg, honoring soldiers from the unit who died in the conflict.
