Private First Class Christopher Lloyd Palmer, 22, of Sacramento, California, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He was killed in action on August 21, 2005, in Baylough, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Christopher Lloyd Palmer was born on July 5, 1983, and grew up in Sacramento, California. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as an infantryman to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade based at Camp Ederle, Italy. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 21, 2005, Palmer was part of a patrol in the mountainous Baylough district of Zabul province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit came under enemy small-arms fire during the operation. Palmer was killed in the engagement. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2005, the mission involved counter-insurgency operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces, with a focus on stabilizing provinces like Zabul. The 173rd Airborne Brigade was a key element of Combined Joint Task Force-76, the primary U.S. combat force in the country at that time.

Palmer's death was reported by several news outlets, including the Associated Press and the Sacramento Bee. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the California State Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
