Corporal Michael Jeremy Palacio, 23, of Lake Elsinore, California, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on March 29, 2012.

Their Story

Michael Jeremy Palacio was a 23-year-old Marine from Lake Elsinore, California. He served as a Corporal with the Military Police Company, Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), which was part of the 3rd Marine Division based in Okinawa, Japan.

On March 29, 2012, Corporal Palacio died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. No further specifics about the engagement were released.

His death occurred during the latter years of the International Security Assistance Force's (ISAF) campaign in Helmand, a province that saw intense fighting. The U.S. Marine Corps bore a significant portion of the combat operations in the region during this period.

Following his death, his body was returned to the United States. A local newspaper in Riverside County reported on the community's mourning and the lowering of flags in his honor.

Corporal Palacio is memorialized on the 'Faces of the Fallen' page maintained by The Washington Post and on the online 'Virtual Wall' of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which also honors those lost in later conflicts.
