U.S. Army Specialist Bobby Justin Pagan, 23, of Austin, Texas, was killed in Zhari province, Afghanistan, on February 13, 2010, while serving with the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment.

Their Story

Bobby Justin Pagan was a 23-year-old soldier from Austin, Texas. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado.

On February 13, 2010, Specialist Pagan died in Zhari province, located in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death was the result of hostile action. He was reportedly killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol, according to contemporaneous news reports and unit memorial pages.

Pagan's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a significant focus on counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Kandahar and Helmand. Zhari district, west of Kandahar city, was a known insurgent stronghold and a frequent site of intense combat.

Following his death, Pagan was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His unit held a memorial service at Forward Operating Base Wilson in Zhari district. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and is included on the roster of fallen soldiers from Texas.
