Their Story
Timothy Paul Padgett was a 28-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from DeFuniak Springs, Florida. He was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The 7th Special Forces Group's area of operations included Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
Sergeant Padgett died on May 8, 2007, in Tarin Kwot, the capital of Uruzgan province in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. The circumstances, as reported by news media at the time, indicate he was killed by small arms fire during a combat operation.
Padgett's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2007, the conflict was marked by a significant Taliban resurgence and intense fighting in the country's southern and eastern provinces, where U.S. and NATO forces conducted counterinsurgency operations.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg.
