Vincent Lee Carson Owens was a 21-year-old from Fort Smith, Arkansas. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Task Force Rakkasan, F Company, 626th Brigade Support Battalion.
Owens died on March 1, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Sharana in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of a hostile incident. No further operational details of the event were publicly released.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In March 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with U.S. and coalition forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations across the country's eastern and southern regions.
The Army posthumously awarded Owens the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal. His remains were returned to Arkansas, where he was buried with military honors at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith.
Owens is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. His name is inscribed on Panel 10W, Line 110 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
