Corporal Michael Webster Ouellette, 28, of Manchester, New Hampshire, was a U.S. Marine killed in a hostile incident in Bastion, Afghanistan, on March 22, 2009.
Their Story
Michael Webster Ouellette was a 28-year-old Marine from Manchester, New Hampshire. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of the Ground Combat Element of the Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force-Afghanistan, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On March 22, 2009, Corporal Ouellette was killed by hostile fire in Bastion, Afghanistan. According to Marine Corps records, he died during combat operations in Helmand Province, a major center of the insurgency at the time.
Ouellette's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern Afghanistan, as part of a broader troop surge.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local New Hampshire media. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
Corporal Ouellette is remembered on memorial walls for fallen service members from New Hampshire. His unit, the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, continued its deployment in Helmand Province following his death.
