Corporal Nicholas Stephen Ott, 23, of Manchester, New Jersey, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on August 10, 2011.
Their Story
Nicholas Stephen Ott was a 23-year-old from Manchester, New Jersey. He served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.
On August 10, 2011, Corporal Ott was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced he died while conducting combat operations. His death was recorded as the result of hostile action.
Ott was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a focal point of intense fighting between coalition forces and Taliban insurgents.
Corporal Ott was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. He was survived by his parents and siblings. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey.
In 2012, a memorial 5K run was held in his hometown of Manchester to honor his memory. His name is inscribed on the Manchester Township Veterans Memorial.
