Lance Corporal Joshua Scott Ose, 19, of Hernando, Mississippi, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on September 20, 2010.

Their Story

Joshua Scott Ose was a 19-year-old from Hernando, Mississippi, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

On September 20, 2010, Lance Corporal Ose was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action, though specific details of the engagement were not released in initial reports.

Ose's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of U.S. forces was deployed, with Marines heavily concentrated in Helmand province to contest Taliban influence. By 2010, the province was the site of intense, daily fighting.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Mississippi media. He was survived by his family in Hernando.

Lance Corporal Ose was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery wall in Newton and is included on the online memorials maintained by the Marine Corps and other veterans' organizations.
