Kyle Bruce Osborn was a 26-year-old sergeant from Lafayette, Indiana, serving with the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On September 13, 2012, Sergeant Osborn was killed in Muqer, a district in Afghanistan's Ghazni province. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred during a patrol.
Osborn's death came during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in 2001. By 2012, a surge of U.S. forces had been deployed, and the mission focused heavily on counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces. Ghazni province was a known area of insurgent activity.
Following his death, Sergeant Osborn was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His body was returned to Indiana, where he was buried in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Local news reported on his funeral and the community's response.
Sergeant Osborn is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Indiana State Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 28W, Line 46 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
