U.S. Army Corporal Benjamin Douglas Osborn, 27, of Queensbury, New York, was killed in hostile action on June 15, 2010, in the Shigalwasheltan District of Konar Province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Benjamin Douglas Osborn grew up in Queensbury, New York, and enlisted in the United States Army. He was assigned as an infantryman to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On June 15, 2010, Corporal Osborn was killed by enemy small arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Shigalwasheltan District of Afghanistan's eastern Konar Province. The patrol was part of a larger operation in the volatile region near the Pakistan border.
Osborn's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The war's focus had shifted to counter-insurgency operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, with intense fighting in eastern provinces like Konar.
The Department of Defense announced his death on June 16, 2010. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, New York.
Corporal Osborn was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the New York State Museum in Albany.
