U.S. Army Specialist James Joseph O'quin Jr., 20, of El Paso, Texas, was killed in action on July 23, 2010, in Orgun-e, Afghanistan.
Their Story
James Joseph O'quin Jr. was a 20-year-old soldier from El Paso, Texas. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On July 23, 2010, the Department of Defense announced that O'quin died in Orgun-e, Paktika province, Afghanistan. He was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol, according to military statements.
O'quin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of U.S. forces was ordered, and by mid-2010, troop levels peaked at nearly 100,000. Operations in Paktika province, bordering Pakistan, frequently involved counterinsurgency patrols and clearing IEDs.
His body was returned to the United States. The El Paso Times reported on his death and memorial services held in his hometown.
He is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division's casualty list and on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Campbell. His name is inscribed on the Texas Capitol's memorial for veterans of the Global War on Terror.
