Javier Olvera was a 20-year-old from Palmdale, California, who enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned as a rifleman to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward). His unit was based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
According to official U.S. Department of Defense casualty records, Lance Corporal Olvera died on August 8, 2009, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. The incident occurred at Camp Bastion, a major British-run airbase in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The base was a hub for U.S. Marine operations in the region.
Olvera's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as international forces attempted to counter a resurgent Taliban insurgency, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand.
