Their Story

Henry San Nicolas Ofeciar was a 37-year-old U.S. Army officer from Agana, Guam. He held the rank of Major and was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, based out of Fort Riley, Kansas, prior to his deployment to Afghanistan.

On August 27, 2007, Major Ofeciar was killed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Naray in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, the base came under hostile fire, and Ofeciar died from wounds sustained in the attack. The incident was part of a series of engagements in the volatile northeastern region near the Pakistan border.

Ofeciar's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict had entered a phase of intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Kunar, where Taliban and other insurgent forces were active.

The Department of Defense announced his death on August 29, 2007. He was one of at least 83 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that month, one of the deadliest periods of the war to that date. His remains were returned to the United States.

Major Ofeciar is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Guam Veterans Cemetery and on the U.S. military's online casualty lists. He was one of 2356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
