Lance Corporal Sean Michael Nicholas O'Connor, 22, of Douglas, Wyoming, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on June 12, 2011.

Their Story

Sean Michael Nicholas O'Connor was born in 1988 and grew up in Douglas, Wyoming. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Lance Corporal with 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Camp Pendleton, California.

On June 12, 2011, O'Connor was killed during a combat operation in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was 22 years old.

O'Connor's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a major center of the conflict, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations against Taliban fighters.

His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local media in Wyoming. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.

O'Connor is remembered on memorials in his home state and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the Wyoming Veterans Memorial in Cody.
