Oceguera, Alex
Private First Class Alex Oceguera, 19, of San Bernardino, California, was a U.S. Army infantryman killed in the Waygal Valley, Afghanistan, on October 31, 2006.
Their Story
Alex Oceguera was a 19-year-old from San Bernardino, California. He served as an infantryman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On October 31, 2006, his unit was conducting combat operations in the Waygal Valley of Afghanistan's Nuristan province. According to military reports, the soldiers came under enemy small-arms fire during the operation. Oceguera was killed in the engagement.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By late 2006, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Nuristan, which bordered Pakistan.
The Department of Defense announced his death on November 2, 2006. He was posthumously promoted from Private to Private First Class. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Riverside National Cemetery in California.
He is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division memorial at Fort Drum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 12E, Line 11 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
