Their Story
Private First Class Alberto Lustre Obod Jr. was a 26-year-old soldier from Orlando, Florida. He served with the 240th Quartermaster Supply Company, 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, based in Bamberg, Germany. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On August 28, 2011, Obod was killed in Kandahar province, a major insurgent stronghold in southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced he died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred during a ground operation.
Obod's death came during the tenth year of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was marked by a sustained counterinsurgency effort and high levels of violence, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions where IEDs were a leading cause of casualties.
The Army posthumously awarded Obod the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. An obituary noted he was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Central Florida and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 240th Quartermaster Supply Company, continued its logistical support mission in Afghanistan following his death.
