U.S. Army Sergeant Jasper Kid Obakrairur, 26, of Hilo, Hawaii, was killed in action on June 1, 2009, in Nerkh, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Sergeant Jasper Kid Obakrairur was a 26-year-old soldier from Hilo, Hawaii. He served with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On June 1, 2009, Obakrairur was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Nerkh district of Afghanistan's Wardak province. The patrol was part of a larger security operation in the region.

Obakrairur's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge aimed at countering a resurgent Taliban insurgency, with intense fighting in provinces like Wardak.

Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the casualty. He was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Sergeant Obakrairur is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the 87th Infantry Regiment's casualty roster from the conflict.
