Their Story

Nathan Jay Nylander was a 35-year-old captain in the United States Air Force, assigned to the 25th Operational Weather Squadron based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona. He was a native of Hockley, Texas. The 25th Operational Weather Squadron provides tactical meteorological support to military operations.

On April 27, 2011, Captain Nylander was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. He was one of at least nine U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that day, which was reported as one of the deadliest single days for U.S. forces in the conflict that year.

Nylander died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a significant international troop presence focused on counterinsurgency and training Afghan security forces.

The Air Force confirmed his death and notified his family. He was posthumously promoted from the rank of captain to major. Memorial services were held in both Arizona and Texas.

Captain Nylander's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Arizona. He is also memorialized on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' database maintained by The Washington Post.
