Their Story
Levi Efrain Nuncio was a 24-year-old soldier from Harrisonburg, Virginia. He served as a Specialist with the U.S. Army's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
On June 22, 2011, Nuncio was killed in Narang District, Kunar Province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death resulted from hostile enemy action. He was part of a unit operating in the volatile eastern region near the Pakistan border.
Nuncio's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Kunar.
