U.S. Army First Lieutenant Mark Anthony Noziska, 24, of Papillion, Nebraska, was killed in a hostile incident on August 30, 2010, in Malajat, Afghanistan.

Their Story

First Lieutenant Mark Anthony Noziska was a 24-year-old infantry officer from Papillion, Nebraska. He was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa prior to his final assignment.

On August 30, 2010, Noziska was killed in Malajat, a district in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. Specific details of the engagement were not released in initial casualty reports, which was standard for operational security at the time.

Noziska's death occurred during a pivotal phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led international military effort in Afghanistan. In late summer 2010, coalition forces, including the 1st Brigade Combat Team from Fort Carson, were engaged in major clearing operations in Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold. The mission aimed to secure population centers and disrupt insurgent networks.

His death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Omaha World-Herald, which noted he was the 36th service member with ties to Nebraska to die in Afghanistan. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He was survived by his parents and siblings.

First Lieutenant Noziska is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Papillion's Veterans Park. His name is also inscribed on Panel 7R, Line 63 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia, ensuring his service is part of the historical record of the war.
