Their Story

David Paul Nowaczyk was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. According to his service record, his deployments included Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On April 15, 2012, Nowaczyk was killed in the village of Chingai, in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was 32 years old at the time of his death.

Nowaczyk's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the conflict was characterized by counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the volatile eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.

His death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Chicago Tribune, which noted he was from the northwest Indiana region. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

Nowaczyk was survived by his wife and children. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the 'Faces of the Fallen' project by The Washington Post.
