Their Story

Adam Jacob Novak was a 20-year-old soldier from Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. He served as a Private Second Class in the United States Army, assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 33rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On August 27, 2010, Novak was killed in the Dzardan District of Paktika province, a volatile region in eastern Afghanistan along the border with Pakistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in separate incidents in Afghanistan that day.

Novak's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as international forces conducted major counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern and southern provinces.

The Department of Defense announced his death on August 30, 2010. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in Prairie du Sac. His death was reported by local Wisconsin media, including the Wisconsin State Journal.

Novak is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and is listed on the 2010 casualty roster maintained by the Defense Department. His name is among the more than 2,300 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom.
