Private First Class Cody Robert Norris, 20, of Houston, Texas, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in a hostile incident at Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, on November 9, 2011.
Their Story
Cody Robert Norris was a 20-year-old from Houston, Texas, who enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a Private First Class with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor Regiment, part of the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Riley, Kansas.
On November 9, 2011, Norris died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident at Kandahar Air Field, a major NATO military installation in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, the incident involved an attack by an individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform. The attack reportedly killed three coalition soldiers and wounded several others.
Norris was deployed as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was involved in security and training operations in the volatile Kandahar region, a longtime stronghold for insurgent forces.
The Department of Defense officially announced Norris's death on November 10, 2011. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Specialist. His body was returned to Texas, where he was buried with military honors.
Norris is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Riley and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty roster maintained by the Pentagon. His name is included in the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's remembrance of those lost in the conflicts.
