Their Story
Rob Lee Nichols was a 24-year-old soldier from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
On July 23, 2013, Specialist Nichols was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the village of Soltan Kheyl, located in the Paktia province of eastern Afghanistan. He was participating in a dismounted patrol when his unit came under attack.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2013, the conflict was in a phase focused on training Afghan forces and conducting counterinsurgency operations, with U.S. troops increasingly embedded with Afghan units.
According to the Department of Defense, Nichols was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom when he died. His name was entered into the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day of his death. A local news report from Colorado Springs noted his death was announced by the Pentagon.
Specialist Nichols is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on other public memorials honoring U.S. service members who died in the conflict.
