Their Story

Kenneth Ray Nichols Jr. was a sergeant from Chrisman, Illinois. He served with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Carson, Colorado. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, he had also served on military assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On December 1, 2009, Sergeant Nichols was killed by hostile fire at Forward Operating Base Michigan in the volatile Paktika province of eastern Afghanistan. The base, located near the Pakistani border, was a frequent target for insurgent rocket and mortar attacks.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting as U.S. forces surged troop levels to counter a resilient Taliban insurgency, particularly in the country's eastern regions.

Sergeant Nichols was survived by his wife and children. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Illinois Fallen Heroes Memorial in Springfield.

Nichols was remembered by his unit as a dedicated soldier. His death was one of 317 U.S. service member fatalities in Afghanistan recorded for the year 2009.
