U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Jamie Scott Nicholas, 32, of Maysel, West Virginia, died on September 29, 2008, in Yakhchal, Afghanistan, from hostile fire while serving with the 7th Special Forces Group.

Their Story

Jamie Scott Nicholas was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier from Maysel, West Virginia. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to the Department of Defense, his military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On September 29, 2008, Sergeant First Class Nicholas was killed during combat operations in the village of Yakhchal, located in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. He was 32 years old.

Nicholas died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, Helmand Province was a major center of insurgent activity and intense fighting between coalition forces and Taliban fighters.

The Department of Defense announced his death on September 30, 2008. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal.

Sergeant First Class Nicholas is memorialized on the Special Forces Memorial Wall at Fort Bragg and at the Afghanistan War Memorial in Charleston, West Virginia. His name is inscribed on Panel 42R, Line 58 of the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.
