Corporal Tevan Lee Nguyen, 21, of Hutto, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on December 28, 2010.
Their Story
Tevan Lee Nguyen was a 21-year-old from Hutto, Texas, a city north of Austin. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served as a Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward.
On December 28, 2010, Corporal Nguyen was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a southern region that was a focal point of the war. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The battalion was engaged in intense fighting in the Sangin district at the time.
Nguyen's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By late 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major troop surge, with Helmand province being a central battleground against Taliban insurgents.
His death was reported by local and national news outlets. The city of Hutto and Williamson County recognized his service. He was survived by his mother, father, and siblings.
