Alan Howard Newton Jr. was a 26-year-old soldier from Asheboro, North Carolina. He served as a Private First Class with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) of the 422nd Civil Affairs Battalion, a U.S. Army Reserve unit based in Greensboro, North Carolina. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, he had reportedly served on missions in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On October 2, 2009, Newton died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. According to the Department of Defense, the incident occurred in the Kandahar province of southern Afghanistan.
