Their Story
Jaime Carlos Newman was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. According to military records, he had also served in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa during his career.
On September 17, 2010, Newman was killed by enemy forces in Maquan, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar province. He was 27 years old. The district was a known Taliban stronghold and a focal point for U.S. military operations at the time.
Newman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was part of the 2010 troop surge, a major escalation of forces aimed at securing population centers and degrading insurgent capabilities in southern Afghanistan.
His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release, and he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Staff Sergeant Newman is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond. His name is also inscribed on Panel 10R, Line 124 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
