Their Story
Eric Colby Newman grew up in Waynesboro, Mississippi. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On October 14, 2010, Sergeant Newman was killed in Akatzai Kalay, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action, though the specific combat incident was not detailed in public releases.
Newman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge and intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar.
