Newlove, Jarod Paul
Petty Officer Second Class Jarod Paul Newlove, 25, of Renton, Washington, a U.S. Navy Reservist, was killed in a hostile incident in Afghanistan on July 28, 2010.
Their Story
Jarod Paul Newlove was a 25-year-old Petty Officer Second Class from Renton, Washington. He served as a Navy Reservist assigned to the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Training Advisory Group-Six-Afghanistan (NTM-A/CTAG-6-A), a unit focused on training Afghan security forces as part of the coalition's counterinsurgency (COIN) effort. His service reportedly included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to Afghanistan.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Newlove died on July 28, 2010, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. The specific location within Afghanistan was not publicly released. He was one of two U.S. Navy sailors killed that day; the other was Petty Officer Third Class James R. Layton. Initial reports indicated the deaths were not related to direct combat but occurred in an undisclosed hostile action.
Newlove's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. July 2010 was part of a period marked by a significant troop surge aimed at reversing Taliban momentum and strengthening Afghan government control. Casualties among coalition forces were high during this phase, with 2010 being the deadliest year of the war for international troops.
The Navy announced the deaths of Newlove and Layton on July 29, 2010. His body was returned to the United States. Public records and memorial pages list his burial at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington.
He is remembered on memorial walls at Tahoma National Cemetery and by veterans' groups. His name is inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 113 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Bellingham, Washington.
