Nevins, Liam Jules
Staff Sgt. Liam Jules Nevins, 32, of Denver, Colorado, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He was killed in a hostile incident in Gardez, Afghanistan, on September 21, 2013.
Their Story
Staff Sgt. Liam Jules Nevins was a Green Beret assigned to B Company, 5th Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. The 32-year-old from Denver had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa during his military service.
On September 21, 2013, Nevins died from wounds sustained during a firefight with insurgent forces in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed by enemy small-arms fire.
Nevins was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred as international forces were drawing down and transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan national forces, a period marked by continued insurgent attacks.
His death was reported by national news outlets including The Denver Post, which noted his Colorado roots. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and the Purple Heart.
Nevins is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Carson and by the Special Forces community. His name is included on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City.
