Joshua Nathaniel Nelson was a 22-year-old soldier from Greenville, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist with Company D, 297th Military Intelligence Battalion, 513th Military Intelligence Brigade, a unit based at Fort Gordon, Georgia.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Nelson died on September 16, 2012, in the village of Spin Murani, located in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The official casualty report listed the cause as hostile action. Specific details of the engagement were not publicly released by the military.
Nelson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
