Captain James Dominic Nehl, 37, of Gardiner, Oregon, was a U.S. Army officer serving with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. He died in a hostile incident in Gelan, Afghanistan, on November 9, 2012.

James Dominic Nehl was a 37-year-old U.S. Army captain from Gardiner, Oregon. He was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. According to the Department of Defense, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Captain Nehl died on November 9, 2012, in Gelan district, Ghazni province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. According to subsequent news reports, he was killed by small arms fire while on patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.
