U.S. Army Sergeant Juan Pantoja Navarro, 23, of Austin, Texas, died on July 7, 2012, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Their Story

Juan Pantoja Navarro was a 23-year-old soldier from Austin, Texas. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, part of Task Force Arrowhead.

On July 7, 2012, Sergeant Navarro died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile enemy action. He was reportedly killed by small arms fire during a patrol or engagement in the volatile region.

Navarro's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the southern provinces like Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold.

The Department of Defense announced his death on July 9, 2012. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to the United States, and services were held in Texas.

Sergeant Navarro is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 24W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
